What to Look for on the Label When Buying Mixed Pickle

The label is your cheat sheet to quality. Ignore the marketing on the front; turn the jar and read.

  1. Ingredient List Order: Ingredients are listed by weight. Vegetables should be first. If water, sugar, or oil is first, be wary.

  2. Oil Type: "Mustard Oil" is ideal. "Vegetable Oil" or "Edible Vegetable Oil" is vague and often means a cheaper, refined blend.

  3. Acidity Regulators & Preservatives: Look for citric acid (natural) vs. sodium benzoate (chemical). Some preservatives are necessary for shelf-stable products, but fewer is better.

  4. Added Colors: "Permitted Natural Colour" is okay (often turmeric). Avoid "Artificial Colour."

  5. Net Weight & Drain Weight: This tells you how much actual vegetable matter is in the jar versus oil and brine.

A transparent label indicates a confident producer. You'll find this level of clarity most often with brands curated in a trustworthy mixed pickle.
